Introduction to Dual Language Education: Key Features and Best Practices A New online self-paced course from CAL and Santillana USA This new interactive, self-paced online course is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to dual language education with a focus on the Three Pillars of dual language education used by successful programs.

This online course provides participants with definitions of dual language education and outlines the fundamental components and goals of dual language programming and instruction.

The online course links program features to the Three Pillars of dual language education and defines dual language education with examples from CAL and Santillana resources with recommended reading from noted experts in the field. Each module begins with a warm-up activity and includes a narrated PowerPoint presentation and readings.

Throughout the course, participants have opportunities to reflect upon and practice new learning, self-assess through quizzes; view real-world examples through video demonstration; and apply lessons learned through applicable wrap-up activities.

This course is designed to provide a deeper understanding of the Three Pillars of Dual Language Education see sidebar. Pillar One sets forth the expectation that students will develop oral skills in two languages bilingualism and the ability to read and write in two languages biliteracy.

Pillar Two presents the goal that students will demonstrate high levels of academic achievement, and they will be able to do so in English and an additional language. Pillar Three makes the promise that students will develop skills in cross-cultural competence that will enable them to function responsively and effectively in a variety of social and cultural contexts.

They will also be able to serve as advocates for equity and social justice in an increasingly global society.

Pillars of education

Upon registration and payment, you will receive log-on credentials for the course via the email you provided upon registration. Each module can be done at your own pace and it should take no more than five hours to complete all three modules. You will have three months to complete the course.

At the conclusion of the course, participants receive a Certificate of Completion from CAL and Santillana that can often be used to obtain continuing education credits from your school or district.
